Just now added to the PS3 was Firmware 3.41 which adds “Recommendations” to the Playstation Store. It will base these on what other people are buying combined with ratings. Kudos to Sony for what seems to be a reaction to the Destination Arcade. I tried checking it out for myself and it seems that it has not quite been implemented yet, maybe in time for the Tuesday update? Word is that a PSP firmware is due as well with more security stuff.

PS3 Firmware 3.41 Released

SingStar doesn’t seem to get a lot of love on other sites so I figured I’d post a little info that may help some people out. SingStar has finally received the 4.4 update that was supposed to be released back in June. It adds Online Battles to play online against friends, Vibrato detection, and the best feature (in my opinion) is the addition of creating SingStar Remote playlists via the PSP. The Community updates are listed after the break.
I just recently saw that there was a firmware update for the PSP which I just assumed went with the PS3 update that also went live today, but I found something interesting: When updating I was told that there were new game sorting categories and when I checked them out I saw a listing for NEO GEO and another for PC Engine. Could this mean that the much rumored addition of these system’s games being added to the PSN Store? I know Japan already has them so maybe it’s just a matter of time before they are here in the US. As long as they aren’t overpriced (I’m looking at your Wii Virtual Console!) this could be cool.
I may be committing a major gaming sin here, but I am going to openly admit to everyone reading this that I never really play the original Final Fantasy. Sure, I rented it once, but RPGs were not all that common back then and I had NO idea what to do thanks to the instructions to Jaws being put in the wrong case so I never thought about that game again and the years went by. Well a “Special Edition” (aka remake) came to PSP and surely I’d know what I’m doing now, right?
What is Brainpipe you ask? Well, according to the description on the PSN Store it is “a unique gaming experience where the ultimate objective is to transcend humanity.” How do you do this you ask? By “navigating the tunnels of your mind, exercising your hand-eye coordination while relishing in the funkadelic sights and sounds of your inner self." Um, yeah, what?
PSP Minis haven’t been given a whole lot of love by me, at least not in my reviews, so I’m going to kick off the latest Indie Games Wednesday with a couple Minis reviews. First up is Bloons which many of you may have played already since it’s everywhere: Flash game sites all over the internet, iphone, DSi, WiiWare. I have only played the PSP Mini version so that is the version I am reviewing right now.
It is no secret that I like Tower Defense games. I have reviewed a few already and I’m usually pretty positive about them. I know that they aren’t for everyone and I know a lot of people are sick of them since they are oversaturated. If you are one of those people, you can probably just skip this review. I played it on my PSP and my PS3 with the new PSP Mini emulation. For those interested in just hearing about the PS3 playing you can scroll down to just above the score to read about that.
For those that haven’t heard or noticed yet, the PS3 has a firmware upgrade available with the major feature being that you can play PSP Minis on your PS3. This sounds like Sony is on its way to making a reality what I wrote about in an Editorial I wrote back in September suggesting Sony update the PS3 to play PSP games. It appears though that right now there are only a handful of games that will actually work with Sony saying that in a couple weeks they will all work. Maybe this will be a test to see how things run and see the demand for more to work. The Minis are not allowed to have network play, so that’s one less thing for them to worry about emulating so I can see why this is a good place to start. Once a game I actually owns works I will post my impressions.
As you may have noticed Amazon is now offering PSN download codes. 1st party Sony titles are now available including PSN Games, PS3 Game Add-Ons, PS1 Classic downloads, and PSP games. Some may see this as pointless since you can just purchase through your PS3 or PSP, but this way now you can use Amazon gift certificates to redeem them and earn rewards if you have an Amazon credit card. As I mentioned, right now it’s just Sony and it’s not complete, but there are still some great games like Fat Princess, Super Stardust HD, and PAIN.
