Here is a quick list of some terms and abbreviations you will see me use here a lot on this site. If there is anything you see on the site that you aren’t sure what it means, and it is not in this glossary, let me know and I will gladly add it. Just leave a comment.
XBLA – Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft’s downloadable game service for the Xbox 360.
PSN - Playstation Network, Sony’s answer to Xbox Live. It can refer to both the service of playing online, as well as downloadable games a la XBLA
WiiWare - Nintendo’s downloadable game service, similar to XBLA and PSN
RPG - Role Playing Game, games like Final Fantasy and Fallout 3
FPS - First Person Shooter, shooting games from your character’s point of view. Games like Halo, Doom, Call of Duty
Brawler/Beat-em-Up - Games where the sole purpose is to go through the levels beating as many people up as possible. Not really prominent anymore, but very popular in the 80s and 90s. Games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage
Hack ‘n Slash/Dungeon Crawler - Games that usually revolve around going from floor to floor in a dungeon “hacking and slashing” your way through enemies. Games like Diablo, Untold Legends, and Gauntlet.
