Response to E-Mails/IMs About Rhythm Games

I’ve been getting some e-mails and IMs about music games, especially way back when I did my review for Guitar Hero: Van Halen, about which series I prefer and which instruments.  Another common question is the best price to get for them.  With Rock Band 3and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock coming soon that means new instruments coming out and the older ones getting cheaper.  I will say this, retail stores seem to be major rip-offs for the most part so check eBay or Amazon for some good deals on new and used.  I have provided some links below.  My instrument preference?  I prefer the Guitar Hero guitars and the Rock Band drums (as long as there are the cymbols added on), although I do like having the Guitar Hero drums for GH games and they are growing on me.  Also below is a nice deal on the Band Hero Super Bundle ($100 for the game, mic, guitar, and drums.  Can’t be beat and the songs can be exported into GH5).  To those that contacted me, was this enough info or would you like something more in depth?

XBLA Review: Destination Arcade

Destination Arcade logo Destination Arcade, a visual browser for all things Xbox Live Arcade, has been released just in time for this year’s Summer of Arcade promotion and it provides a vastly updated way to browse XBLA games – whether you are looking for something to buy or pick something to play in your own collection.  Should we take the time (and hard drive space) to download this, or just do things the way we are used to?

Indie Games Wednesday – XBLI Review: Bloody Death

Bloody Death cover Are you old enough to remember when games didn’t have ratings?  Do you remember one of the major reasons they do now?  If you said Mortal Kombat, you would be right… but I’m talking about Night Trap.  Yes, Night Trap starring the late Dana Plato came out on the Sega CD at a time when video games were thought to be “kids toys” and took people by surprise because it had realistic video of real people (although the quality is laughable by today’s standards) in a horror video game of sorts (it was mostly a parody but that is beside the point).  Why am I talking about Night Trap in a review that is not for Night Trap?  Well because it spawned a string of barely interactive FMV (Full Motion Video) games and we can now relive those glory days (??) with Bloody Death on Xbox Live Indie Games.

Destination Arcade Launches for Summer of Arcade

Don’t forget everyone that today sees the launch of Destination Arcade.  This is something you can download here that is a much better way to look through and recommend games on Xbox Live Arcade by using what they call a “visual browser.”  For some strange reason though it will only be available during the Summer of Arcade promotion.  It will continue to work afterwards, but why only available then makes no sense to me, so make sure to go and download it now.  Also as a reminder today was the release of Limbo, the first game of Summer of Arcade and if you buy all the games in the promotion you will get 1200 MS points back.

Avatar Rockets (XBLI) Updated [UPDATED 7-22]

Avatar Rockets cover Avatar Rockets on Xbox Live Indie Games has been updated.  Going to bed now but will try it out tomorrow to see what has changed.  In the meantime if you don’t know the game, click here to read my review of the game before the update.

[UPDATE 7-22 @ 2:36 AM] So I have been checking the last few days and whenever I load the game up it does not say anything about an update so I am curious if I had bad information or if the update process is not working.  Anyone out there have any info?

Xbox 360 Review: Alan Wake

Alan Wake cover After being announced years ago and delay after delay, Alan Wake is finally here.  Most games with that type of history end up being a disaster.  Does Alan Wake follow that trend?

Xbox 360 Slim Model Released

xbox360logo1 Just as Sony did with the PS3, Microsoft has announced a slimmer Xbox 360 shipping tomorrow.  Unlike the slim PS3 though, it adds features instead of taking them away with the exception of the memory card slots.  Now that you can use any USB drive you want they just replaced the two memory card ports with two USB slots so now there are a total of 5 USB ports to use (Just in time for Rock Band 3! hehe).  They are also adding a port for use with the Kinect (the official name for Project Natal) so you can just plug it in and play (apparently with the original Xbox you will need a dongle and another power supply/source for using Kinect).  I will be picking one up as soon as I can and will post further impressions.

Indie Games Wednesday – XBLI Review: Old Spice Racers

Old Spice Racers cover The second batch of Old Spice sponsored gaming is here and the first one I tried out was Old Spice Racers after a chat with the developers telling me it was a modern take on the SNES classic Uniracers.  So, how much is it like that game?  Will gamers today care?
