Sony likes to hype that “It Does Everything” (I’m not going to get into why that saying bugs me) and one of the reasons is because you can go online and rent movies from their video store. I will say this about the service: If you do in fact choose to do so, plan ahead as it takes a LONG time to download the movie, especially if you rent in HD, and you can’t start watching until it gets to a certain point. I did this on Halloween and watched Stan Helsing, a horror movie parody in the vein of all the horrible and overplayed “____ Movie” movies. Did we make a mistake?

A few weeks back I reviewed Night of the Comet on DVD and mentioned how it was one of the most wanted movies to come out to DVD. The other movie that topped that list was Night of the Creeps and now it not only is out on DVD but Blu-Ray as well complete with the original ending that fans have been wanting. Night of the Comet didn’t quite live up to the hype after I viewed it, did Night of the Creeps?
It’s a rainy Thursday night, your Xbox is overheating and the pizza delivery guy just arrived with pepperoni, hamburger, and bacon pizza (mmmmm… bacon). What do you do while you eat? Why, pop in Slaughter High on DVD, of course. What, that wasn’t your first choice? Yeah, I guess I can’t blame you. This is the situation I found myself in today though, my friends wanted to watch a horror movie and there it was sitting in my collection still yet to be opened. Why was it there? Simple, it was $5 and I remember the cover being in every horror section of every video store in the 80s and 90s. It was released by Lionsgate as part of their new “Lost Collection” line of movies. None of us had seen it, so we figured what the hell, it should be good for a laugh. I really can’t explain any better than that as to why were were watching, but in the end, I’m glad we did. Was it a good movie? No, but we DID laugh.
Today’s review is for an underrated movie by the name of So I Married an Axe Murderer. The movie was a disappointment to many, but slowly gained a following years after its release thanks to Mike Myers’ popularity surging after the Austin Powers movies. It is available on NetFlix Instant, DVD, and Blu-Ray, so no reason not to check it out now.
Yes, you read the title right, the 18 Year Old Virgin. I have not started to review porn but Asylum Pictures known for their “mockbuster” movies such as The Day The Earth Stopped, Snakes on a Train, and Transmorphers decided to try their hand at the raunchy teen comedy. Unlike the other movies mentioned that rely on special effects and action, a teen comedy can be made on a very small budget, so this actually works. American Pie this is not, but more like its straight-to-DVD sequels. Good for a few laughs, but nothing to rave about.
In my very first Forgotten Friday I did a review for the biopic 8 Seconds. I did not care much for the movie and said that part of it could have been the fact that I had not heard of the person it was based on before seeing the movie. Well, here is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, another biopic of someone I didn’t know anything about before seeing this, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Back in high school and college DVD was a brand new format that let me discover all kinds of movies I missed out on as a kid. I would frequent many forums and one of the top movies that always showed up on people’s most wanted lists was Night of the Comet. It finally came to DVD and I finally got to see what all the fuss was about…
What would happen if Meet the Parents was released 3 years earlier, and instead of a guy having bad things happen to him because of his bad luck, it’s because his bag on the plane was swapped with that of a hitman? Ok, that’s still bad luck, but you would get 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag, one of the reasons that Orion Pictures is no longer in business.
UPDATE: Looks like the trailer has been taken down from YouTube, sorry.
